BHS and British Equestrian Advice for Horse Owners and Livery Yards in England

during the Coronavirus (Covid-19) outbreak

England - National Lockdown 5 January 2021

England is now under a National Lockdown and there are new restrictions in place which will impact on horse owners and our riding schools. We understand how worrying this new lockdown will be for everyone but please be assured that the BHS will be providing support and guidance as it becomes available.

  • During the lockdown riding schools must close for public lessons and activities.
  • Arena hire is not permitted, however arenas can be used for exercising horses which are stabled at the venue, livery yard or riding school.
  • Horse owners, loaners and sharers can continue to travel to care for and exercise their horse when it is not kept at home.
  • Livery yards can continue to allow horse owners, loaners or sharers to care for and exercise their horse.
  • Horse riding can continue although all organised activities and competitions will be required to stop.
  • Essential visits for the welfare of horses e.g. farrier, vet and physio can continue.

Can I have a riding lesson on my horse at the livery yard?

  • Yes, on a 1 to 1 basis, a lesson can take place on the yard where you keep your horse.

Guidance for Coaches

Yes, the Government guidance states that you can travel to work where you cannot work from home, but the overarching message of the lockdown is to stay at home. We advise that Coaches should:
  • Travel to work where they are unable to work from home.
  • Read the Government guidance and assess whether face to face coaching is a necessity.
  • Only undertake1 to 1 instruction at the location where the horse is kept. Arena or facility hire is not permitted.
  • Where a coach has their own facility they should only coach clients where the horse lives on site. Clients and horses should not be travelling for lessons.
  • At all times ensure COVID secure practices are observed.

Viewing, buying and selling horses

  • Covid secure measures must be fully implemented when viewing and /or collecting purchased horses for transportation.

Am I able to travel my horse to a training venue?

Currently, training and competition venues are ordered to close across the home nations. If you have access to a private facility and travelling a horse there to exercise is essential for its welfare, you may travel to use it. Social distancing, hygiene measures and numbers should be strictly observed. Please ensure all parties have correct and valid insurances in place before any activity takes place.
